Jim Leyland named fifth annual “Chuck Tanner Major League Baseball Manager of the Year”

Former Pirates skipper earns honor from Rotary Club of Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH, PA – The Rotary Club of Pittsburgh has announced the winner of its 5th Annual Chuck Tanner Major League Baseball Manager of the Year Award.  Jim Leyland, Manager of the Detroit Tigers, is the 2011 Chuck Tanner Major League Baseball Manager of the Year.

Each year the award selection committee, which includes a number of MLB executives, former players and writers, makes their selection within a week of the final regular season game.  Previous winners of the award are Joe Torre, Joe Maddon, Ron Gardenhire and Charlie Manuel. The award presentation will take place at a banquet on November 19, 2011 at the David Lawrence Convention Center.
 
In addition, the Rotary Club of Pittsburgh has announced its 2nd Collegiate Baseball Manager of the Year. Jim Chester, 4th year Head Coach of the Penn State Greater Allegheny baseball program is the award recipient. Mr. Chester will also be presented with his award on November 19, 2011.
 
The Master of Ceremonies for the event is Larry Richert of KDKA-AM.  Returning to conduct the live auction will be James Roddey, former Allegheny County Executive. A number of Pirates Alumni and baseball professionals will be on hand for the “Tribute to Chuck” hosted by Paul Alexander of 93.7-FM “The Fan.”
 
The program’s Honorary Chairperson is Bob Nutting, Chairman of the Board, Pittsburgh Pirates.
 
Erie native and nationally recognized Celebrity Sports Artist Kevin-John is returning to create a special limited edition Chuck Tanner memorabilia print for everyone in attendance and will be present to personally sign his creation.  Kevin-John’s artwork has been showcased on ESPN, Spike TV, and NBC, at Super Bowl XXXIX, XL, XLI and the PGA Tour.
