North Shore Notes 6/29: Pirates v. Brewers

The Pittsburgh Pirates (49-30) clash with the Milwaukee Brewers (32-46) tonight at PNC Park in the second game of a three-game set between the National League Central rivals. Francisco Liriano (6-3, 2.30 ERA) toes the rubber for the Bucs while the Brewers counter with Donovan Hand (0-0, 2.37 ERA).

–The Pirates enter tonight’s game with the best record and baseball and have an opportunity in their next two games to make history. One win in either tonight’s game or Sunday’s would give the Pirates 50 wins prior to July 1 for the first time in franchise history. The earliest a team ever reached 50 wins was when the 1971 squad won its 50th game on July 1 en route to a 97-65 regular season record and World Series title.

–Continuing with milestones, the Pirates have won seven games in a row and are 9-2 in their last 11 games. Currently, the Pirates are 19 games over .500 and that marks the first time the franchise has held such a record since the 1992 team finished its season 96-66.

–Francisco Liriano looks to tie Jeff Locke for the team lead in wins at seven tonight, and Liriano’s start will conclude a month of June that has so far seen him go 3-2 with a 2.27 ERA. In his 54 and two-thirds innings this season, Liriano has struck out 61 batters.

–On this date in Pirates history, Willie Stargell became the first Pirate to hit 400 career home runs when he homered against the St. Louis Cardinals in a 9-1 victory.

–Wandy Rodriguez has suffered a set-back in his attempts to return from a forearm injury. The Pirates announced Rodriguez has been shut down this afternoon. On a bright note, A.J. Burnett’s return seems to be close as he threw a 28-pitch bullpen session today and will throw again later this week.
