Flyers 3 – Penguins 2
Consol Energy Center, Pittsburgh
The Penguins powerplay continued to struggle, costing the team yet again in a 3-2 loss to the Flyers. The Pens’ power play went 0-6 and allowed a shorthanded goal by the Flyers’ Claude Giroux, sending the Penguins to their second straight defeat and second home loss to cross-state Philadelphia.
GAME FLOW
The game started off chippy as Matt Cooke and Flyers captain Mike Richards got into a fight just four seconds into the game. Deryk Engelland continued to prove he can brawl with the big boys and he bloodied Flyer enforcer Jody Shelley just moments after the Cooke fight. At 8:12 of the first, the Pens got another defenssive goal as Kris Letang finished off a beautiful tic-tac-toe goal with assists from Evgeni Malkin and Mike Comrie. The Flyers scored the next three goals as Giroux’s second short handed goal against the Pens this season turned the momentum. Eight minutes later, Philly’s Dan Carcillo got his first of the year. Giroux scored the eventual game-winner just after the halfway mark of the third period on a power play. Tyler Kennedy’s goal with just 45 seconds remaining was too little, too late.
