Pirates come back to stop Cardinals 5-3

Pedro Alvarez, Russell Martin and Clint Barmes combined for 6 hits, 5 runs, a homer and 2 RBI as the Pirates put up a 4-spot in the seventh and evened their series in St. Louis at one apiece with a 5-3 over the Cardinals at Busch Stadium this evening.

Martin’s 2-run homerun in the seventh sparked the Pirates big inning, and A.J. Burnett pitched six strong innings to lift the Pirates to the victory.

The Bucs (14-10) other seventh inning runs came from an Andrew McCutchen bases loaded walk and a Garret Jones RBI ground out.

Gaby Sanchez put the game out of reach with a sacrifice fly to make the score 5-2 in the 8th, and Jason Grilli picked up the save despite allowing his first run of the season in the ninth.

The Pirates had 10 hits off of a combination of five Cardinal pitcher.

Burnett gave up 5 hits with 3 walks and 6 strikeouts.

The series concludes tomorrow at 2:15
