Pirates end losing streak with 7-6 win over Cubs

Andrew McCutchen and Clint Barmes homered, Garrett Jones knocked in two runs and Wandy Rodriguez continued to pitch well as the Pirates snapped their losing streak with a 7-6 win in Chicago.

Joel Hanrahan labored through a tough ninth inning but finally shut the door to preserve a 7-6 victory. Andrew McCutchen hit his 28th homerun and Starling Marte added a pair of runs.

The Pirates got off to a very strong start as they built a 6-1 lead by the end of the fourth inning. Marte sparked the inning with a triple and Garrett Jones padded the lead with a key RBI double.

Wandy Rodriguez had another solid outing as he gave up only one earned run on nine hits over six innings. Rodriguez did not have his shut down stuff but he was able to work around his own sixth inning error and deliver a strong start.

The Cubs scratched out two runs in the fifth inning and a single run in the eighth to make the game interesting, but Clint Barmes added a key homerun to help the Pirates carry a seemingly comfortably 7-4 lead into the ninth inning.

The final frame turned out to be very interesting for Hanrahan, who seemed to be a little rusty. Hanrahan’s control was all over the place as he walked three batters in the ninth, including a bases loaded walk to Cubs third baseman Luis Valbuena that cut the Pirates lead to 7-6. Hanrahan eventually struck out catcher Wellington Castillo to end the game and the Pirates seven game losing streak.

The Pirates take on the Cubs Sunday as Jeff Locke (0-1) oppose Chris Volstad (3-10) at 2:20 ET at Wrigley Field.
