Pirates place catcher Snyder on DL

Toregas recalled from Indy amid all the catcher injuries

The Pirates have placed catcher Chris Snyder on the 15-day disabled list (low back) and have selected catcher Wyatt Toregas from triple-A Indianapolis.

The 28-year-old Toregas, a non-roster invitee this spring, made 11 appearances with Indy this season, nine at catcher and two as the designated hitter. Toregas played 19 games in the big leagues with Cleveland in 2009 and went 9-for-51 (.176) with six RBI.

Snyder left Wednesday’s extra-inning victory over Arizona in the second inning, and Ryan Doumit is currently on the 15-day disabled list with a broken ankle. Doumit is expected to miss the remainder of the month with the injury.

Additionally, usual reserve Jason Jaramillo, who began the season with the Pirates but has been at triple-A since late April, has been out with an elbow injury.

Rightfielder Matt Diaz and second baseman Neil Walker are the Pirates’ emergency catchers.
