The Pirates recalled lefty Tony Watson from triple-A Indianapolis and designated Jose Ascanio for assignment. Ascanio is out of options and will have to clear waivers. In 29 1/3 innings, Watson has allowed 19 hits and 8 earned runs. He walked 11 and struck out 29.
Watson joins fellow rookie Daniel Moskos as left-handers in the Pirates’ bullpen.
Ascanio, acquired from the Cubs two years ago, has battled injuries since being acquired by the Pirates. After recovering from surgery on his right shoulder, he had a setback with his right elbow this spring that left him on the disabled list until mid-May.
Ascanio made eight appearances, allowing five runs on 10 hits in 6 1/3 innings.
